If you like nature visit the Nestos gorge. From Toxotes (between Kavala and Xanthi) you can walk into the gorge, or you can take the train through the gorge. It leaves at about 10 o'clock from Toxotes and you can get out in Stavroupoli. There the train has to wait for the train from the other direct...

The Monastery Panteleimoni above Mikros Prinos, the ancient site of Alyki, the lake Genna just passed Maries (is dirt road but is possible with normal car, don't go any further though!), mountain villages Theologos, Maries, Kazaviti (all good roads).
I guess that's enough to keep you busy

I can't tell you about the apartments, but if you are looking for something quiet you definately have to go to Skala Rachoni!
Potos is quite crowded, especially in July/August.
The beaches at and near S.Rachoni are very beautiful and sandy.
